Kaufmann brings together several contrasting threads in an impressive
debut disc from Decca. The tenor has an old-fashioned approach to
repertoire, drawing from different Fachs ... yet bringing a modern and
hip acting sensibility to each work. Another contrast Kaufmann
reconciles is the vocal sound itself, with a baritonal warmth yet easy
top, a dreamy intimacy but with plenty of backbone. Most impressive of
all, his unconventional and highly individualized approach revitalizes
standard arias with naturalness and emotional truth....“E lucevan le
stelle” has never sounded so intimate and internalized; when Kaufmann
ascends softly on “o dolci baci, o languide carezze,” we seem to be
inside Cavaradossi’s mind and heart. |

Mit seinem Solo-Debüt auf Decca zeigt Kaufmann die beeindruckende
Ausdrucksvielfalt seiner Stimme — lyrisch und baritonal grundiert, warm,
voll, balsamisch weich und farbenreich. Walthers „Preislied“ aus Wagners
„Meistersingern“ wird mit ihm zur rauschhaft gesteigerten Feier der
unendlichen Melodie, zur Performance eines jungen, wilden,
charismatischen Sängergenies. |

...His voice sounds like a cross between the glowing Wunderlich and the gritty
Vickers, and he excels here, especially in the German (solos from Weber’s
Freischütz and Wagner’s Meistersinger) and French repertoire. Compare his
enthralling mezza voce high C at the climax of Faust’s Salut! Demeure (Gounod)
and the visceral, full-voiced high notes in Nature immense, from Berlioz’s music
for the same character. His Puccini (La bohème, Tosca) and Massenet (Manon,
Werther) make one long to hear him sing this repertoire in the theatre. A
triumph. |

years. Listening to his first recital disc, due for release on 14
January 2008, the day of his first Alfredo at Covent Garden, it is easy
to see why (.....)
There has been a plethora of fine new tenors making their marks during
this first decade of the new millennium. Judging from this debut recital
Jonas Kaufmann is well equipped to be among the leaders – and stay
there. |

...Das Unglaubliche gelingt: Arien, die man genau kennt,
hört man wie zum ersten Mal, weil Kaufmann das Denken und Fühlen der Figuren
Klang werden lässt. Seine musikalische Seelenerforschung ist frei von der
besserwisserischen Tendenz, Neues um des Neuen willen zu bieten. Und sie
entgeht auch der Gefahr, in ein monotones Einheits-Gesäusel abzugleiten.
Schon beim Entrée seines Programms lässt er ein hohes C hören, um das ihn
mancher italienische oder lateinamerikanische Konkurrent nur beneiden
kann....
