[Gheorghiu, Kaufmann, Pappano]
|
1
- There is a quite superb Pinkerton from Jonas Kaufmann, who
captures all the character's phoney Yankee bravado.
2 - Gheorghiu is too forceful to make a weak-willed geisha, and
Kaufmann matches her with a vocal virility that needs no chemical aids.
This is Winslet-Di Caprio casting, a jousting of differences that
engages heart and mind regardless of plot inanities.
3 - Continuing the partnership with Gheorgiu that has already
resulted in triumphant productions of La Traviata and La Rondine, Jonas
Kaufmann's performance establishes him as one of the few young tenors
capable of filling Pavarotti's shoes.
10 - The discriminating tenor Jonas Kaufmann sings a very fine
Pinkerton, a touch baritonal in quality but none the worse for that.
What he does lack, inevitably, is the Italianate quality that artists
like Gigli, Carlo Bergonzi and Pavarotti have brought to the role - an
American, admittedly, but most effectively sung with a Latin dynamism
and impetuousness contained within the tone itself. His is nevertheless
a highly intelligent and stylish reading.
11 - Jonas Kaufmann's husky Pinkerton is excellent; if he skimps
on ardour, that's because Butterfly's fake husband is more in lust than
love.
12 - The big-name draw on the set is Angela Gheorghiu in the
title role but, superb as she is, it’s tenor Jonas Kaufmann who creates
the greatest sense of a fresh interpretation. At first he sings the role
of Pinkerton like a young puppy bouncing with high spirits and passion
without a thought for the consequences of his actions. It’s irresistibly
charming and yet he brings an occasional hint of calculation and steel
to his voice in the act one love duet to suggest the ruthlessness that
appears more fully in act two. It is complex, rounded, ear opening — and
perhaps even enough to make the callow character sympathetic.
14 - But, as Pinkerton, Jonas Kaufmann is gloriously cast, a lustful
naval hero, and the duet, as the newly-weds prepare for their first
night together, is captivating. ...The end of the 1st act of Madama
Butterfly with Angela Gheorghiu and Jonas Kaufmann, looking forward to a
night of wedded bliss, aided and delected by Antonio Pappano and the
Orchestra dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia. Kaufmann,
especially, in glorious form as Pinkerton. ...Jonas Kaufmann's Pinkerton
though is a great performance
Seiten abzugewinnen.
16 - Kaufmann’s hefty, baritonal sound is
certainly thrilling and there is every justification for characterising
the cruel, feckless Pinkerton as a bit of a brute.
17 - Kaufmann is known for the intensity with which he
throws himself into his roles, and he's completely convincing as an
arrogant, opportunistic imperialist who can also be a real charmer. His
timbre is heroic, and he sings with a compelling Latinate fervor.
18 - The rest of the cast live up to her standard: Jonas Kaufmann
is an ardent Pinkerton although he cannot, as Gedda (with Callas) and
Bergonzi (with Tebaldi and Scotto) both did, suggest a touch of youthful
charm, the only possible redeeming feature for this anti-hero.
21 - "A Butterfly for the 21st century" is how this set describes
itself, without telling us why. Raising more questions than it answers,
it forces us to confront the equation between US imperialism and sex
tourism that forms the opera's subtext. This is due in no small measure
to an epoch-making performance from Jonas Kaufmann as Pinkerton -
psychologically the most complete on disc, and a totally credible
portrait of a cynic who views the far east as both alien and
appropriable, yet who is also capable of turning on a devastating
seductive charm at will. We understand entirely why Angela Gheorghiu's
Butterfly lets him destroy her world.....Kaufmann is essential
listening.
22 - This umpteenth studio recording of Giacomo Puccini's
tearjerker is built around Romanian soprano Angela Gheorghiu, but it's
her co-star, Jonas Kaufmann, who really makes the listener sit up and
take notice.....Kaufmann, a German tenor whose star is rising fast on
the opera scene, captures the tenderness and passion, as well as the
self-pity, of Lt. Pinkerton. His flexible voice seems to do just what he
asks of it at all times. He is masterful in the long love scene that
closes Act 1, but just as striking is the delicacy of his initial
exchange with Butterfly — for instance, the way he softly sighs the word
"grazie."
24 - Munich-born Jonas Kaufmann steals the show as Pinkerton. He
already did it as Don José in a recent Carmen from Covent Garden (DVD
DECCA 074 312), he does it again here with a virile, macho
characterization of the repentant Yankee vagabondo that is just right
for the German tenor in spite of some vocal huskiness. Expressive and
powerful, it doesn’t matter if he doesn’t have the honeyed style of
Carlo Bergonzi (Barbirolli and Serafin), the youthful insolence of
Giuseppe Di Stéfano (Gavazzeni) nor the qualities of Bjorling (Santini),
Gedda (Karajan) or Domingo (in the Ponnelle film and the excellent 1978
Scotto second reading with Maazel). Let alone Pavarotti’s superb
Pinkerton for Karajan.
eigentlich keinen dringenden Bedarf.
27 - Fenomen tenor Kaufmann - Jonas Kaufmann, son iki yılın
‘tenor fenomeni’.
getiriyorlar.
28 - Ihr schnöder US-Lover Pinkerton hat bei Startenor Jonas
Kaufmann herrlich glutvolle Momente.
verfügen beide ohnehin in reichem Maße....
Pinkterton. Der deutsche Startenor gibt den schwierigen Charakter
kräftig und einfühlsam.
31 - Of course the redemption comes in the last act--the measure
is precisely how filled with regret and self-loathing Pinkerton seems in
his "Addio". Kaufmann, a terrific singing actor who takes great care
with dynamics and phrasing, is not particularly lighthearted in Act 1,
but he clearly sweeps Butterfly off her feet with his infatuation and
sex appeal. His "Addio" is big and filled with misery. Purists may argue
that Kaufmann's voice is not echt-Italian; I would counter by saying
that his Pinkerton is one of the best-sung on discs.
34 - As for Kaufmann, every time I hear him, my admiration grows.
He, too, has a splendidly heady Italianate voice, used with a Northern
European restraint. This is much to the music's advantage and is, of
course, essential in a recording intended for repeated listening as
there are no irritating mannerisms. This Butterfly is a triumph and
joins the Barbirolli and Karajan sets
Ehefrau.
Sinn.
37 - Her Pinkerton is the handsome young Finnish (?!!?)
tenor Jonas Kaufmann, who tentatively lives up to his hype.
Alagna sondern Jonas Kaufmann.
42 - Jonas Kaufmann as the winning, faithless Pinkerton is on
tremendous form, too, though he does make the role more sympathetic than
usual.
43 - Jonas Kaufmann's Pinkerton and Enkelejda Shkosa's Suzuki are
more sensitive to the veiled nuances of their characters
47 - If some compromises are necessary in order to accept Gheorghiu as Butterfly, no such concerns arise with the ideal casting of Jonas Kaufmann as Pinkerton. He has the requisite virility, legato sweep and pointed text to do full justice to his role and demonstrates, on occasion, some remarkable vocal beauty.
50 - Kaufmann is superb as Pinkerton—one wishes he had more to
sing...
Bad Guy
Pinkerton-figuren er ingen lett rolle å gi sympatiske trekk.
i stemmen, blir heldigvis kvalt i fødselen.
amerikanischen Leutnant Pinkerton leiht.
59 - You feel Pinkerton's ulterior motives in Jonas Kaufmann's
baritonal shades, unlike many "pure" tenors in this role, and he sings
very well.
60 - ... and matching the singers who wear their hearts on their
sleeves with tenderness and passion.
64 - Jonas Kaufmann is sensitive to the text and offers abundant
musical nuance, but one wishes the tenor had a bit more youthful
squillo in his voice: its baritonal quality is at odds with
Pinkerton's callow nature and compromises some of the vocal moments that
cry out for a tenorial ring.
66 - As Lieutenant Pinkerton, the guy who thinks he can buy a
girl and then cast her aside, Kaufmann sings with clear, open and heroic
tone. Nobody, except perhaps Bergonzi on his two recordings, can make
Pinkerton anything but a loathsome cad. Kaufmann accepts that reality
and plays him for what Pinkerton is, a macho Yank, and does so
convincingly.
68 - Jonas Kaufmann's dark-hued tenor voice makes for a
believable Pinkerton, while Pappano gives a loving and expansive reading
of the sensuous score. This must be the best recorded assumption of this
role in recent times.
aria, ‘Addio, fiorito asil’.
71 - Kaufmann has conceived Pinkerton as a ruthless cad and the
German singer is in thrilling voice, even if his characterisation does
not quite depose memories of Giuseppe di Stefano.
73 - This is an account of "Madama Butterfly" that can hold its
head up high in the recorded company that it joins. Fans of the
principal singers need not hesitate, and Pappano's conducting on its own
terms is a very good reason to hear this recording. |
