It
was with the music of Verdi that Jonas Kaufmann made his international
breakthrough in 2006, when he sang the role of Alfredo in La traviata at the
Met. And this year, being Verdi's bicentenary, Kaufmann has been kept busy
with performances of Don Carlo in London, Milan and Salzburg, as well as two
role debuts - in Il trovatore and La forza del destino - and this, his first
album devoted to Verdi.
The CD features 13 highlights, of which 11
are firsts for the tenor. On stage he has so far sung only La donna è mobile
from Rigoletto and the duet with the Marquis de Posa from Don Carlo. All the
other pieces he learned especially for this album.
Recorded in the
composer’s home city of Parma, the album reveals Kaufmann's exceptional
vocal development and flexibility - and anticipates what we have to look
forward to in years to come, notably the lead role in Verdi's Otello.
