Dolce Vita — review

The
tenor’s singing smoulders with lustrous tone in this disc of
Italian songs that includes many of the usual favourites
In readiness for the Christmas market the world’s star German
operatic tenor is heading for some winter sunshine.
Jonas
Kaufmann’s disc of Italian popular songs includes many of the
usual favourites, like “Torna a Surriento” and “Volare”.
Closely miked, his singing smoulders with lustrous tone and the
arrangements of the (rather scrappy) Palermo orchestra conducted
by Asher Fisch bring to mind feel-good Italian movies of the
1960s. The tenor’s admirers will have little cause for
complaint.
This really was prime territory for Luciano
Pavarotti, though. His voice shone like the Italian sun.
