Romantic Arias

Jonas
Kaufmann is with Rolando Villazon the most exciting tenor to emerge lately
and he is the most versatile as he shows on this disc of Verdi, Puccini,
Massenet, Berlioz, Gounod, Flotow, Weber and Wagner. His Italian repertory
is slightly unidiomatic but none the less impressive. An extract from La
Traviata is thrilling in its drama and lyricism, while well known arias from
Massenet's Manon and Werther are sensuous and virile. The tone is pure and
unforced both honeyed and strong. The Prize Song and Berlioz's invocation to
nature from Faust are winners. Marco Armiliato conducts.
