Classical’s DVD captures the Bavarian State Opera’s 2014
production of La forza del destino live with Anja Harteros and
Jonas Kaufmann — a pair worth the journey across Europe.
Harteros, who rarely sings outside Germany, is ravishing as the
ill-fated Leonora and well partnered by Kaufmann’s anguished,
heroic Don Alvaro. The rest of the cast offer solid support.
Conductor Asher Fisch does the necessary, but no more.
Martin Kušej’s modern-dress production is of its time.
The evening belonged to Munich’s golden couple.
