Franz Welser-Möst: SCHUBERT Fierrabras on EMI
|
|
|
Franz
Welser-Möst obviously is fond of the score and conducts brilliantly.
Jonas Kaufmann’s dramatic tenor is fine in the role of Fierrabras. Both
Christoph Strehl and Michael Volle are excellent in their roles. László
Polgár is a fury as the King, despite having to wear a toy crown. Günther
Groissböck sings well as the Moorish king. The two sopranos are less
competent. Juliane Banse has a rich tone, but has problems handling the high
notes. Twyla Robinson has not the kind of dramatic soprano that is necessary
for the role. The picture quality is excellent, brief notes are included,
and subtitles are available. Since this opera is rarely performed and rarely
recorded, anyone who appreciates Schubert and German Romantic opera should
not hesitate, despite the silly production. |
